French, Minor

The undergraduate minor in French requires a minimum of 15 s.h., including at least 9 s.h. taken at the University of Iowa. Students must maintain a grade-point average of at least 2.00 in all courses for the minor and in all UI courses for the minor. Coursework in the minor may not be taken pass/nonpass. CLAS minors may only be earned concurrent with or subsequent to earning a University of Iowa bachelor's degree. They cannot be granted as standalone credentials or as the sole program of study completed at the University of Iowa.
The French Language and Culture Advanced Placement (AP) exam with a score of 4 or higher is considered to be the equivalent to FREN:3000 Third-Year French. Furthering Language Incentive Program (FLIP) credit may not be counted toward the minor.
Coursework
Student select from French (prefix FREN) courses numbered 3000–4999. One course numbered below 3000 may also count toward the elective requirement if it is numbered 1005–1699, 1901–2009, or 2501-2999. Students who have completed FREN:2001 or FREN:2002 may also apply up to 3 s.h. from one of these courses to the minor.
A maximum of one course taught in English may be applied to the minor; see "Courses Taught in English" in the BA in French section of the catalog.
Study Abroad
Credit from the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) programs in Pau and Lyon, France, and the Study in Montpellier program in France counts as University of Iowa credit for the minor; 6 s.h. earned in other study abroad programs may be counted toward the minor.
Teacher Licensure
Those who plan to use their work toward a minor in French as an academic background for earning teacher licensure should contact the Office of Student Services in the College of Education about requirements.
